Nepal has a population of 25 million people, one third of which live below the poverty line. The majority of its 8.5 million children live in rural areas, and many belong to extremely poor families, are malnourished and anaemic.
The country has suffered substantial civil unrest and political tension over the past decade.

“I would like to thank the children, communities and partners Plan works with for making 2010 successful despite difficult circumstances. The support of sponsors and donors is also very much appreciated.”
Donal Keane, Country Director, Plan Nepal
Plan has been in Nepal since 1978. Working with local government bodies to improve health services, water and sanitation, education, household economic security and child protection, we have a direct presence in eight of Nepal’s 75 districts, and reach a further 35 through local partners.
Recent highlights of Plan’s work:
- Improved the lives of 2,000 girls who had been sold into indentured servitude.
- The Ministry of Local Development was supported to manage universal birth registration throughout the country.
- Helped 900 schools to implement a non-violent teaching code of conduct.
- Helped the government to update its National Action Plan to stop human trafficking.
