Most of Egypt’s 80 million inhabitants live in the valley or delta of the world’s longest river, the Nile. Sixty percent of Egyptian people depend on the land for their survival.
Over the past 10 years, Egypt has made efforts to protect children’s rights and improve its maternal and child mortality rates. Despite its growing economy, around 20 percent of Egypt’s population lives in poverty. Women and children are especially vulnerable.

“Plan has been very dynamic in advocacy initiatives, together with partner organisations.”
EMac Abbey, Country Director, Plan Egypt
Plan is working with children, families and their communities in two urban and three rural areas of Egypt. Together, we are committed to improving the health, education and future opportunities for the poorest children.
Recent highlights of Plan’s work:
- Started more than 100 women’s literacy groups, teaching women how to read and write, and giving them the knowledge and confidence to take action for change in their communities.
- Helped more than 300 young people to complete employment training courses. Of these, 85 percent have secured a job.
- Trained children in media activities to raise awareness and lobby for change in areas such as child protection and gender equality.
