In Ecuador there are many threats to children’s lives. Many children are vulnerable to daily violence, exploitation, neglect and abuse caused by a variety of factors. Drug gangs formed to supply the cocaine trade lead many vulnerable youngsters into lives of drug use and delinquency. Poor standards of sex education mean teenage pregnancy is a big problem. Another factor is the high level of migration to the richer USA, meaning children are often left behind by parents seeking work. The indigenous population suffers in particular from discrimination, and their children are often bullied, threatened or unable to go to school.
A Plan-supported project will improve child protection in 13 provinces in a hope to bring about radical long-term change to Ecuador’s culture that will benefit generations of children to come.
The project works by strengthening the legal framework that protects children and involving the whole community in guaranteeing children’s rights. We have set up and trained special community councils made up of adults and young people. These councils investigate cases of abuse, co-ordinate responses, and find the right solution to the individual problems of boys and girls.
We have also provided training for professionals such as teachers, police and social workers, making them more aware of how to recognise and respond to vulnerable children. Through reaching teachers and other professionals we can ensure that children have the chance of a brighter future.
By promoting cultural tolerance, campaigning for children’s rights and raising awareness about the long-term benefits of education we can put an end to abuse and help communities look after their children and their own future.
