We recommend keeping your letter simple and easy to understand. In many cases, your letter will need to be translated when it reaches our field offices. Simple and clear language helps. It also makes it easier for your sponsored child to reply.
2
Here are some suggestions: describe your typical day or a recent event. Letter writing offers a great way for you to learn about their culture and for them to learn more about yours. Whatever you choose to write about, start with a warm greeting. In many cultures, particularly in Africa, greetings are extremely important and will get you off on the right foot.
3
This will show you are interested in your sponsored child and will make it easier for them to know what to write back. You could ask about their school, their favourite subjects and games, their family or what they want to be when they grow up.
Please bear cultural differences in mind and make sure you don't ask any questions that could seem over familiar or too personal. It's best to avoid some subjects, especially politics and religion.
4
Including a photograph of yourself is a good idea as it helps your sponsored child and their family to get an impression of who you are. Again, since cultural attitudes may differ and some images may offend, we always advise sponsors to err on the side of caution by avoiding photos that contain people in bathing costumes, cuddling pets or drinking alcohol.
5
Your sponsored child will love receiving an uplifting message from you! It's an opportunity for you to encourage and support them.
If you haven't written before, don't worry - we can help.
