Plan works to empower girls and give them opportunity to shape their own lives. It is the right, fair and smart thing to do.

My participation in the project activities has made a lot of difference in my life. This has also made me very confident and I now know that with education I can progress in life.

Providing a girl with a quality education means:
- She is likely to earn more and reinvest that income back into her family and community.
- She is less likely to be forced or coerced into an early marriage, to become pregnant at a young age and less likely to die during childbirth. Pregnancy and childbirth are the leading cause of death for girls aged 15 – 19 in the world’s poorest countries.
- As a literate mother, she is more likely to educate her children. Education and child survival go hand in hand. Children of mothers with a primary school education are 40% more likely to survive beyond the age of five.
- With knowledge of her right to healthcare, she will be healthier, as will her children. Educated girls have fewer and healthier children and are less likely to contract HIV.
- She will understand her rights, have the confidence to claim them and to determine her own future.
What we do
Our ‘Because I am a Girl’ campaign aims to remove the barriers that prevent girls from getting a quality education. With an education, a girl can transform her world and the world around her. It is the right, fair and smart thing to do and will help end poverty for generations to come.
