A key focus of Plan UK's 'Because I am a Girl' campaign is working to support an end to early and forced marriage in the world’s poorest countries.
Every year, 10 million girls are married young and too often against their will. This often means a sudden end to their childhood and the chance of going to school. It can shorten their lives by leaving them more vulnerable to violence, HIV and death in childbirth.
Plan works to show that education can provide an alternative path to marriage for girls and their communities. Educated girls are less likely to marry early and stay in school. Educated girls can go on to help end poverty in their community.
