Liberia
Plan returned to Liberia in December 2006, 14 years after the civil war forced us to close down operations and leave the country.
Plan's office in the capital Monrovia is working to support the reconstruction and development efforts to help children across Liberia.
Most primary schools were destroyed by the civil war. Through a local partner - Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) - Plan is currently supporting a rapid education project, which has so far benefited more than 4,000 war-affected children. The project aims to return children to learning as quickly as possible, while providing psychosocial support to help them deal with post-conflict trauma.
Another priority for Plan is to work on researching a decentralised birth registration system in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, a necessary step for a national Universal Birth Registration campaign.
Plan is currently engaging local authorities and local and international non-governmental organisations in various development discussions on how to best respond to the needs of Liberian children.
Some of the reasons why Plan works in Liberia:
- Liberia is one of the poorest countries in the world
- 73% of the population do not have access to adequate sanitation facilities
- infant and under-5 mortality rates are among the five highest in the world
