Cameroon

Cameroon is located on the western coast of Central Africa with a population of 16.6 million. Due to its placement between varying geographical regions, Cameroon has a rich climatic diversity.

Since full independence in 1961, Cameroon has struggled from a one-party rule to a multi-party system. Until the mid 80s, favourable global market conditions aided trade of the country’s key exports - oil, cocoa, coffee and cotton, boosting economic development.

However instability in the market led to a decade of harsh recession and increased debt, which the country is still recovering from. More than half the population lives on less than $2 a day, making it one of the world’s poorest countries.

Also an estimated 56% of the population is under 20 years of age and access to basic education, especially for girls, is of real concern. The lack of formal education and vocational training of young people is seen to contribute to the prevalence of child labour and trafficking in rural areas. HIV/AIDS is becoming an increased threat particularly to young people.
