Girls awarded school scholarships
Plan has been assisting girls from different communities in the district of Kibaha, Tanzania to continue their education.

Those who had passed and gained admission in government secondary schools but could not join due to lack of school fees, were awarded scholarships as part of Plan’s Secondary Education Scholarship Scheme, some of which include sponsored children from sponsored families.

Nyantwiga, 16 years old, is one such child who has benefited. Following her father’s death, her uncle started taking care of her, when her uncle also passed away, her aunt who was not working was unable to afford the school fee. Nyantwiga said;

“I am very happy to be selected as one of the beneficiaries of the scheme. I feel as one of the very lucky children in this district and I promise to do better and will produce a very good progress report at the end of a year.”

The applications were reviewed and selected by a team composing of the community committee, Plan staff, various community leaders, teachers, ward education supervisor and representatives of children from primary schools in the community.

A total of 98 girls were selected to benefit from this scholarship support. After selection, Plan paid school fees, examination fees and other school expenses like accommodation, medical expenses, building contributions, food, and in some schools furniture. The payments were made directly to the respective secondary schools.

Sauda, 17 years of age, lives with her aunt in the village of Mlandizi, her parents are poor farmers who live in another region called Mtwara in the southern part of Tanzania, she said:

“My aunt earns very little and cannot suffice to feed her family and pay my school fee. Without Plan’s support I would not have been able to continue my secondary education.”
