Plan at the G8

Two teenagers from Malawi and Kenya arrived in the UK last week to take part in some of the G8 activities in Scotland. They are Chikondi, a 16 year-old girl from Malawi and Gordon, a 17 year-old boy from Kenya.

The teenagers attended the Make Poverty History rally in Edinburgh on Saturday 2nd July, and then went on to participate in a youth debate called ‘the C8’ earlier this week. The C8 is a children and young people’s version of the G8 meeting organised by a coalition of charities including Plan, Unicef, ActionAid, Sightsavers and Comic Relief.

The highlight of their week was a meeting with the G8 spouses on Thursday 7th July, where they were able to talk about their hopes for the future of Africa.

Both Chikondi and Oyoo participated in the ‘Young People’s Commission for Africa’ project - a web-based project organised by Plan UK between 25 schools in the UK and 25 in Africa set up to give young people the chance to have their views on Africa heard in the run up to the G8.
