Floods hit northeast Haiti, Plan communities affected
Heavy rains have caused massive flooding in northeast Haiti, affecting several communities, including those in Ouanaminthe department where Plan works. The flooding was reportedly caused by water overflowing from the river Massacre, on the border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
In Ouanaminthe, 190 households have been made homeless, including 109 children. More than 100 homes have been partially damaged and 28 totally destroyed in the floods. More than 400 farms have been damaged, with the loss of more than 150 livestock.
Plan communities affected
The following Plan-supported communities have been partially submerged in the floods: Gaillard, Dosmon, Robino, Plaine de Rose, Ti Massacre, Desas, Village des Oliviers, Roman Baro and Savane au Lait.
Local volunteers and the mayoralty of Ouanaminthe are providing food, shelter and emergency assistance to the affected families. Plan is carrying out assessments on the extent of damage and on people's immediate needs.
At this time, we do not have confirmed reports on the impact on sponsored children. If we receive information about any sponsored children or their families, affected sponsors will be informed directly.
