| Training is essential for health care workers |
 |
“The training course is very useful for us, not only for building our capacity, but also for improving our work in the field. I received a certification from a professional training course, which makes me more confident in my work.” Le Thi Cau, a village health worker from the Tinh Dong commune.
In Vietnam, health workers in rural villages like Le Thi Cau, are receiving invaluable professional training skills on community-based health management through the provision of training courses supported by Plan.
Primary health care services for poor children and their families in Vietnam face many challenges, one of which is the limited capacity of the village health workers in terms of professional knowledge and management skills. Many have not received formal training and there are a limited number of local trainers and professional bodies available to help build their skills.
Nguyen Huong, Headmaster of Medical Secondary School in the province of Quang Ngai says; “village health workers have always done an essential job, but without proper training they are not prepared for the changing needs of the community. The annual budget for building their skills is very low, so it is very important that Plan has decided to support their training with the assistance of the Medical High School.”
Plan has so far provided two training courses across three communes (provinces) for all the local health workers, providing them with professional knowledge and practical experience. Trainees have attained professional qualifications on preventative hygiene, health-care for mothers and children in the home, first aid, and project implementation of community health.
