Children like Bryan (11), who cycles to and from school and helps around the house, just like any other kid his age. However, Bryan does all this with just one leg.
Bryan, who lives a small rural community in the Philippines, has been sponsored through Plan for three years. On a rainy afternoon in 2002 he was playing inside a partially-constructed house and poked a spider with a bamboo stick. As the stick touched the dangling cable of a live wire, Bryan collapsed. A passer-by saw him bounce from the 2nd floor onto the ground. He was then rushed to hospital where he was treated for a month after his amputation.
He was so determined to get back to his normal life that once discharged from hospital he learnt how to ride his bicycle, treading the pedal with one foot.
However Bryan wants an artificial leg. He has been screened for the 'Differently-Abled Children Project' (DACREP), a project Plan supports for children with disabilities, and is awaiting a leg prosthesis, a support instrument that would enable him to do so much more. Bryan hopes the prosthesis would help him realise his dream:
