Due to high temperatures at the beginning of the Summer, the snow from the mountainous of Afghanistan and Pakistan melted and flooded rivers and tributaries in NWFP, including the Kabul, Swat, Dir, Chitral and Indus rivers. This, together with huge quantities of water released in the river Chenab by India and the monsoon season contributed to exacerbate the situation.
Areas that were affected
Punjab – the worst affected areas were the Layya, Sialkot, Hafizabad and Rajanpur Districts.
North Western Frontier Province - more than 50 villages were inundated by floodwater in three districts: Peshawar, Charsada and Nowshera. 2,500 – 3,000 houses were fully or partially damaged in the area with 12,000 people displaced by heavy flooding and extensive damage to over 14,000 ha of agricultural land.
Plan's response
Plan Pakistan is a member of Pakistan Humanitarian Forum, along with other humanitarian organisations. The Forum promptly carried out an assessment of the situation and, in collaboration with Plan, coordinated actions and joint efforts to respond to the disaster. As a result, 11,258 flood-affected families were provided with immediate relief. Plan also provided:
- 3,406 families with food
- 2,000 families with livestock fodder
- 1,200 families with shelter material
- 4,500 families with hygiene kits
- Access to latrines through the construction of 169 latrines
- A three-day workshop on health and hygiene to train medical staff to deal with problems faced by the community during the emergency situation
Plan would like to thank Isle of Man Overseas Aid for their kind contribution to the on-going relief work in the area.
