Chhing Lamu first started working with disadvantaged groups in Nepal in 1978, when she was a school-teacher in the hill village where she grew up. Since then she has worked with a large number of voluntary and social organisations and networks. Over the last years she has been working with Plan to assist deprived children and their families.
Chhing was nominated for this year's Nobel Peace Prize for her work in Nepalese communities for the protection of the poor and disadvantaged.
“Through Plan I continue to work closely with thousands of children, women and disadvantaged groups such as the Dalit, who are often marginalised because of their lower caste status.
“My focus is on helping to build strong civil societies through empowerment of children, women and other disadvantaged groups. Plan’s Child-Centred Community Development is also helping to promote long-lasting development and improve the lives of children and their communities.
“Nepal has many problems, but I believe that conflict resolution from the grassroots will lead to top-level peace. Everything is possible,” says Chhing.
