ECCD - Early Childhood Care for Development
Plan joined Bangladeshi communities in developing early learning opportunities for children and their parents.
For a child to develop and learn in a healthy and normal way, it is important not only to meet the basic needs for protection, food and health care, but also to meet the basic needs for interaction, stimulation, affection, security and learning through exploration and discovery.
There is a general pattern or sequence for development that is true of most children. However, the rate, character, and quality of development varies from child to child. Culture influences development in different ways and the goals for children differ from culture to culture.
Early childhood care and development is not well advanced in Bangladesh, though many national NGOs have started to provide pre-school education programs linked to primary education. On the other hand, traditional child rearing practices and indigenous knowledge are also disappearing in the society, due to changes in family members' roles, family patterns, rural to urban migration and an increase in restlessness and tension.
Plan, working together with national NGOs, has been instrumental in convincing the government to address issues such as pre-schooling, early learning opportunities, day care centres in urban areas, and project-based nutritional development for children.
Since not may NGOs have expertise in this area, Plan is seen as the leading technical resource on this issue in Bangladesh. We are now looking to share knowledge and form coalitions with other NGOs in order to extend this support to thousands more children.
