What CAP has achieved so far

CAP has done lots of great work in showing adults that young people should have a say too because they have very important and intelligent things to say that often adults don’t think of!

Telling politicians how it is

  • CAP members met with Undersecretary for International Development Gareth Thomas in July 2006 to ask him to listen to young people who are affected by HIV/AIDS. “We did this by making him feel what it is like to be ignored even when you have something important to say” (CAP).

  • Olivia and Maurice interviewed Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott on slavery in April 2007. You can watch the interview here

Alia and Kurtis participated at an international conference about gender in Berlin in February 2007 as representatives of Plan UK alongside their peers from other European countries, Asia, Africa and Latin America. The discussions and creative work produced by all the young people was presented to Minister of European Parliament Lissy Grossner on what young people think is needed for an equal world between girls and boys. CAP members came up with ideas on the issues that affect them in the UK that they want the EU to focus on
  • CAP came up with a response to the European Union’s plan for Child Rights which was presented to Ministers in March 2007. They have taken all the opinions of young people consulted all over the world on board (including CAP’s) before they decide on the final plan – and will be consulting young people again for their excellent input.

  • Durgha spoke out at the launch of Plan’s Because I am a Girl campaign on what it’s like to be a girl in the UK and then joined a roundtable discussion about the discrimination that girls face all over the world with Cherie Blair amongst other influential women. You can see videos of the launch on Plan UK's YouTube page

Katie and Durgha with Nigel Reo-Coker
  • Katie and Durgha interviewed West Ham footballer Nigel Reo-Coker on the issue of slavery to raise awareness of its modern forms that still exist today (such as child labour and trafficking) for the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery. You can watch the interview here

  • CAP took part in the ‘Send my Friend to School’ campaign to pressure world leaders to help millions of young people too poor to go to school. You can learn more about the campaign by going to www.sendmyfriend.org

  • Olivia appeared on Manchester BBC Radio in January 2007 discussing the work of CAP, Plan and the importance of listening to young people.

  • CAP members have appeared in lots of newspapers and magazines telling the world what they think needs to be done to eradicate world poverty!

Working with children in developing countries

  • CAP are currently creating a pack about what it’s like to be a young person in the UK for sponsored children and their communities so that they can share experiences on what it’s like to live in a different part of the world.
