 | Children expand their horizons at a summer camp
At a summer camp in the Philippines around 400 children enjoyed a learning experience that promoted leadership, friendship, unity – and the life skills necessary for growth and development.
For children and youth leaders in Southern Leyte, the Summer Camp held at the Pintuyan National Vocation School was an unforgettable experience. The camp was organised by Plan in partnership with local government and schools.
Camp started with tent set-up, a group activity that motivated team spirit and camaraderie. Then came exercises to warm up participants’ energy levels.

Later, the children listened to messages from invited guests, including Southern Leyte Governor Rosette Lerias. They also had the opportunity to express themselves and make their vioces heard during an open forum, as youth leaders raised issues affecting their life in Southern Leyte.
By far, the most exciting activity was a realistic fire drill and fire-fighting exercise, but there were also visual arts sessions conducted by facilitators from the University of the Philippines.
The next two days were filled with skill-building activities, and programmes to enhance knowledge about good health and hygiene. Participants also learned basic life skills including emergency rescue and life-saving techniques. Other workshops focused on first aid and paramedics, rope work and rappelling, water survival, plus lots of team building.
