Building relationships
The quality of children's lives depends on the quality of their relationships. A key component of child-centred community development is the building of relationships based on respect for their rights between children and those on whom they depend for their well being and development. These include gender relationships, their relationships with their families and communities, and the way in which local and national institutions view and treat them.
Through consultation with children, Plan has come to understand how prevalent are the problems of discrimination, exploitation and abuse and how these are often perpetrated within the very institutions that exist to protect children - the family, school and social sector.
Plan places real emphasis on building strong relationships between all those with whom we collaborate. Not only does this ensure a deeper understanding of our work and goals but, equally importantly, it promotes a real strength in the commitment of all those involved in improving the lives of children.
