Severe flooding in Malawi affects thousands of children

01/02/2012

Emergency supplies Over 6,000 people are living in camps in Malawi including over 3,500 children as a result of severe flooding following prolonged heavy rainfall and a cyclone that hit neighbouring Mozambique. These conditions are expected to continue for some weeks.

Food and shelter are priorities. People are currently living on one maize-based meal a day. They have only makeshift shelters which make them vulnerable to mosquitoes as well as the weather. Medical supplies are low and schools have had to close.

Plan is working with a local partner organisation in Nsanji and is set to provide emergency supplies including nutritious food, plastic sheets for shelters, fuel or firewood for cooking and insecticide-treated nets. We will prioritise child protection and are planning to set up child-friendly centres where children can learn and play and to distribute toys and school equipment.

We need your help

  • A gift of £38 from you could buy a 20kg bag of cereal to feed hungry babies.
  • £85 could pay for a roll of plastic sheeting to shelter families from continuing rain.
  • £100 could buy over 250 exercise books and over a thousand pencils so children can continue their education.

Please make a donation online or over the phone on 0800 526848.

  • As the G8 leaders sit down at Camp David this week, it is to be hoped that the attention of the world's media won't be on what they will be eating or what their partners are wearing as has happened at previous summits. If a new food security and nutrition initiative is to be announced, then this is the real story, at least for millions of people across the Sahel region currently at risk of chronic malnutrition.
