TRAUMATISED children are struggling to cope in the wake of the Philippines floods – according to aid agency Plan International.
Tropical storm Washi has left 957 people are dead and hundreds missing after tearing through Mindanao early on Saturday.
More than 280,000 fled their homes – with 45,000 in evacuation centres.
“We are seeing children who have gone through terrible experiences and who are showing signs of profound stress,“ says Carin van der Hor, Plan’s Country Director in the Philippines.
“In some areas children are being forced to beg on the streets and the authorities are aware that hundreds of school students still need to be traced.”
Plan has launched a £1 million appeal to get relief to survivors.
“People are in desperate need of practical items like clean drinking water and hygiene kits to keep down the risk of disease,” says Carin van der Hor.
“Some are converting cement mixers and gas tankers into water tanks.”
“However, we know from experience that emotional support is also absolutely crucial for survivors, especially for the most at-risk groups, such as children.”
Plan is sending 10,000 specialist hygiene kits, 10,000 water purifiers and 2,000 water containers to Iligan City and Cagayan de Oro.
The organisation is now working on delivering mosquito nets and blankets.
“During such a time of upheaval, we are focusing on keeping children safe,” says Carin van der Hor.
“Many schools are shut due to the disaster. We want to work towards creating special areas for children to play in the evacuation centres – as well as room for mothers to breastfeed.”
