Goal 5: Improve maternal health

I think we have to do something about poverty and hunger. In many countries there are families who do not have the necessary means for their children to be healthy and be happy

In many countries high maternal mortality rates are the result of inadequate reproductive healthcare for women and inadequately spaced births. The high rate of maternal mortality throughout much of the developing world is the result of serious neglect of women's reproductive health particularly for the poorest women, as well as ineffective interventions.

The primary means of preventing maternal deaths is to provide rapid access to emergency obstetrical care, including treatment of haemorrahages, infections, hypertention and obstructured labour. It is also important to ensure that a midwife or a trained traditional birth attendant is present at every delivery.

Some of our projects:

Training traditional birth attendants in Ghana
Approximately 250 out of 100,000 women die while giving birth or following complications after childbirth in Ghana. The figures are higher in some rural areas where health education is poor and the facilities inadequate. Plan is training traditional birth attendants to become instruments for education, change and development within their communities

Swasthya Sathis - health workers
They are proved to be much more than village health workers. These local women act as a resource and lead persons for their villages not just on matters concerning health
