1) Why is my gift so important?
As long as children live in poverty, there is a need to give them the opportunities they need to fulfil their potential. Unfortunately, this need is likely to exist beyond our lifetimes. A legacy is an effective way to help as many children as possible, for as long as possible.

2) How do I include Plan in my Will?
Plan advises anyone wishing to make a Will, or amending an existing one, to visit a practising solicitor.
If you are unsure how best to help Plan, leaving a percentage of your estate may be the best option, as the value of your gift will remain unaffected by inflation. This is called a residuary gift and is a gift left from the residue of your estate once you have provided for all your family and friends.

4) I've already got a Will, is it easy to change it?
Yes it is. You can do this by asking your solicitor to add a codicil (a legal amendment) to your Will. However, if substantial changes are to be made, we advise you to ask your solicitor to draft a fresh Will to avoid any errors.
It is important that your Will is up to date and reflects your current circumstances.

5) What if I don’t have a solicitor?
Plan can supply a shortlist of solicitors local to you who specialise in Wills, from which you can choose.

6) Are there any tax benefits?
Any money left to charity in a Will is free from Inheritance Tax. So leaving a gift to Plan will not only help the world’s poorest communities, but can also reduce your Inheritance Tax liability. This is because any legacies to charities are deducted from the value of your estate prior to taxation.
7) Can I leave a legacy to the child I sponsor or a specific type of project?
It is not possible for you to leave a legacy through Plan directly to the child you sponsor. Nor is it advisable to limit your gift to benefit a very specific type of project. You can however let us know if you want your legacy to benefit a general area of work. Naturally, we will follow your wishes as closely as we possibly can. But, please bear in mind that, as we are talking about long into the future, we may no longer be working in countries or areas we currently work in. Therefore please allow us a degree of flexibility in order to ensure your support is used where it is needed most.
If there is a specific area of Plan’s work you would like your legacy to support, please call us on 020 7482 9769 and we will be happy to discuss it with you.

8) How will my legacy be spent?
In the particular case of legacies, Plan can guarantee that every penny of the gift you leave to Plan will be spent on projects that will help improve the lives of children and their communities in developing countries. Wherever possible, we let families or executors know the project a particular legacy has funded or helped fund.

9) Can I continue to sponsor after I die by leaving a legacy?
As soon as we receive notification of a death we inform the sponsored child, bring the sponsorship to a close and arrange for the sponsored child to be re-sponsored. This is done to ensure that your family receives no communications that may cause them unnecessary distress. However if a family member or friend wishes to continue sponsoring that child for you they can do so by contacting us as soon as possible.
