A Fond Farewell in Kenya: Zandra meets Adam
Having sponsored Adam (18) since 1996, Zandra Massie decided it was time she went to visit him in Kenya. As Adam was due to leave the sponsorship program, it was a chance to say goodbye and see the difference that Plan had made in his community, with the help of sponsors like Zandra.
A Family Gathering
"We first went to Adam's old primary school and were taken round by the headmaster. I was impressed with the buildings and learnt that Plan had provided electricity and a water tank for rain catchments."
"We went on to meet the family and I was introduced to his parents and to Adam himself. Adam and I got on very well, chatting to each other and his English was very good. Many of his family were there and we talked through Beth, a Plan community volunteer, who acted as my interpreter. I was taken to see their plot of land where they grow cotton."
"We then had a lovely meal of goat stew which I had never eaten before and loved it! During the meal I gave the family presents I had bought. Adam's 80 year old grandmother appeared during the meal and she was great fun!"
A Fond Farewell
"On leaving, Adam gave me a beautiful homemade basket and handbrush which I keep on display in my home."
"As I left I felt quite overcome and grateful for such a warm and friendly reception. I was very impressed by their cheerfulness and happiness!"
"I would encourage all sponsors to visit their sponsor child. I am sure it would enrich their lives as it has mine. I feel that we in the West can learn a lot through meeting these wonderful people."
