All money raised for the ‘Because I am a Girl’ campaign will be allocated to projects which benefit girls in the world’s poorest countries.
These projects will change over time – as some reach completion, others will come on board – but they will all target vulnerable girls and help them reach their full potential.
The range and diversity of the projects will grow as the ‘Because I am a Girl’ campaign gains momentum and donations increase.
Current projects
We currently have three projects supported by the Girls’ Fund, two focusing on the education of girls in countries recently ravaged by war: Sierra Leone and Liberia. The other focuses on vocational training for girls in the slums of Bangladesh.
Bursaries and a boarding house in Sierra Leone “My parents were killed during the war, when I was three. I was taken by the rebel soldiers. First I carried supplies. When I reached puberty I was abused, as all the girls were. Now I am at secondary school, but cannot afford the fees. I want to finish school so I can become a lawyer and make something of my life,” said Hawa, a 17-year-old former child soldier. Read more
Bursaries and classrooms in Liberia “Without the help I’ve received I would have been in the position of many Liberian girls who often have to resort to prostitution to provide for themselves and their families,” said Nyanpu, who has benefited from the project. Read more
Skills development training for teenage girls in Bangladesh Insufficient training opportunities and the poor economic situation of parents within the slums of Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka mean that many teenage girls are often forced to support themselves by working in unskilled positions such as domestic servants, market stall vendors or rubbish collectors.
