Indonesian 17 year old speaks at EU Green Week

22nd - 26th June was the EU's official Green Week, and Nurul, a 17-year-old girl from Jakarta, shared her views as Plan Indonesia's ambassador for promoting and campaigning on climate change.

Nurul was a key speaker in the session "Can Media and Society Change Global Attitudes", and took part in a Q&A session with policy makers and expert speakers.

The EU Green Week is the biggest annual conference on European environment policy, with more than 3500 participants from across Europe. Participants represent institutions, business, non-governmental organisations, public authorities, the scientific community and academia.

Plan UK were represented by Leon Ward and other members of our Youth Advisory Panel, Leon said:

"GreenWeek was an amazing opportunity, a chance to network with large corporations and different NGO's. Youth Participation is crucial in the battle of the Climate Crisis, time is short and we must change our ways. The future is unclear but young people must be consulted at all times particularly in the developing countries, where the effects are already being felt; they should not and must not be disadvantaged because of their location. They have a right to voice their concerns and a right to be consulted.  Solidarity and unity is the key, we must tackle this together. It's time to act and adapt."

6 Billion people facing one fight

Nurul is passionate about climate change and the role of young people in making a difference.

"We have come to a time when differences must be pushed aside to win this fight against climate Change. There are about 6 billion other people living on the same earth as we do facing the same fight," she says.

"The differences are, some notice and some don't, some care and some do not care, some take actions and some stay still. It is our responsibility as the people who notice, care and take actions to make every single one of us notice, care and take actions all together.

"This is an extremely important fight, because the lost of it may cause us and our children's future. But if we can build an efficient strategy and move together, I'm sure we can win this fight and restore nature's harmony to our earth.

"The future is in our hands. Every child has a voice to be heard! We will prove that we can help make a difference too!"

From EU Green Week:

Nurul wrote a daily blog about her experiences in Brussels.

The European Commission produced a short film of Plan Youth Advisors' participation at Green Week.

Nurul and members of Plan’s Youth Advisory Panel interviewed key EU policy makers on their commitment to child rights issues in relation to climate change, and received these responses:

“Children have their right to speak about their future” – Ladislav Miko from Minister of Environment - Czech Republic

“Young people should get loud to make everybody listen” – Mr. Reinhard Butilcotev MEP from Germany

“Young people should make their voices been heard” – Nicholas Hanley: Head of Communications and Governance Unit, DG ENV, European Commission
