Managing disasters

During times of disaster children are most vulnerable and Plan is ready to respond to protect their rights and make sure their needs are provided for.

When emergencies occur in countries where Plan is already present, with our extensive relationships and knowledge of communities, local structures and institutions, we are best placed to assist the affected children and their families respond to the disaster.

In countries where Plan is not present or our presence is limited, but we have the capacity to respond, we work with local and international organisations to maximise the impact of the response to the disaster.

Partnering with the European Commission to reduce the impact of disasters

Since the start of 2005 the European Commission Humanitarian Office (ECHO) has worked with Plan to respond to disasters across the world, contributing over €2,000,000 to programmes in Asia and Central America. This has included:
  • emergency relief in India after the tsunami and in Timor Leste this year
  • further rehabilitation work in India in 2006, and support to house reconstruction in El Salvador
