Domains of work
Our vision is of a world in which all children realise their full potential in societies which respect people's rights and dignity.
How do we go about realising our vision
We believe the answer lies in building the foundations for long-term improvements in the lives of children and the communities in which they live. It's a process that can only work effectively at what we call the 'grassroots' level, out in the field, in the communities where we work.
Our projects can be successful only with the full participation of the people our work benefits: local families, community groups and, of course, the children themselves; they know best and understand their challenges.
Plan's local workers and volunteers are familiar with the area and the issues local people face and are committed to working there for long periods - usually 10 to 12 years - to achieve long-term change.
Each year, Plan funds more than 20,000 new projects and thousands of on-going ones. Our projects can be grouped into five key domains of work:
Education Plan uses a life-cycle approach to education. This ensures that the sufficient needs of all age-groups of children are appropriately met and helps integrate health and education activities more effectively
Health Plan's health-related programmes contribute towards securing the rights of children and young people to survival, development, protection and participation
Building relationships The quality of children's lives depends on the quality of their relationships with those on whom they depend for their well being and development. Plan places real emphasis on building strong relationships between all those with whom Plan collaborates
Livelihood The right to an income 'Now we can pay school fees and buy pencils and exercise books for our children.' If a family's income is increased, its children can be better provided for
Habitat Plan views children's habitat both in terms of the physical environment in which they live and the social structures of their communities. Plan works with these structures to encourage the participation of children and to raise the awareness of the issues they face.
