Head of Finance (circa £50,000)

Plan UK is the British member of Plan International, a major international children’s development agency. We work with children, families and communities in the world’s poorest countries. With no religious or political affiliation, we aim to overcome poverty and injustice by encouraging children to claim their rights.  Our goal is to empower a community with the ability to continue the work we started together, long after we’re gone. 

Each project is facilitated by the community itself, and partnerships are put in place with local NGOs.  Plan UK’s turnover is in excess of £40m annually and our offices will be in Old Street from May 2010. 

The growth of Plan UK in recent years has seen some significant changes in the structure of the organisation. We have created a new role of Head of Finance who will work closely with the Director of Finance, and other leaders across the organisation, to help deliver its vision while ensuring that financial affairs are managed effectively and professionally.

A selection of specific duties and responsibilities include:

• Management and Financial Accounting - to include year end accounting process, responsibility for balance sheet integrity, monthly management accounts for both the Senior Management Team and other operational managers
• Planning and Budgeting – including considerable liaison with non-finance operational staff
• Finance IT Systems – maintaining, updating and modernising
• Managing the team of 6 staff
• Taking a lead on improvements in a range of finance related issues – e.g. streamlining new processes and procedures to enhance value for money; developing meaningful KPI’s that deliver long term savings.

This is a truly fantastic opportunity for either a current or aspiring Head of Finance to work for a capable and talented Finance Director who has many years of experience in both the commercial and not for profit sectors. He is looking for someone who:

• Is used to providing high levels of service to the internal customers
• Is deadline and delivery focussed
• Is committed to being part of a team
• Has Project Management experience i.e. has started and seen through an identifiable project ideally working across various departments
• Can demonstrate appropriate progress/experience in their chosen career thus far that would allow them to execute a Head of Finance role to a high standard.

You must be a qualified accountant and you must have a desire to work for a charity although having done so before is not a pre-requisite. What is much more important is your “can-do” approach, your professional work ethic and your track record of meeting and exceeding expectations in your career to date.
