INVESTING IN EDUCATION
Johnson Matthey believes that sustainability is inclusive, with a strong tradition of good community relations, the company and its employees are actively involved in programmes worldwide.
Since its first partnership in 1838, Johnson Matthey has supported educational causes, and continues to do so today through Plan International UK.
The project aims to improve girls’ school attendance and learning by increasing the number of female teachers in Sierra Leone, particularly in rural areas.
TEACHER TRAINING
In Sierra Leone, only a quarter of girls are still attending school by the time they finish primary school. We know a powerful reason for this is the lack of female teachers in schools.
With just 12 per cent of teachers being women in Sierra Leone, the project will work across five districts of rural Sierra Leone and gives over 400 young women the chance to become teachers through specially designed distance learning courses and classroom experience.
Over the duration of the project, with the support of local partners, and supporters like Johnson Matthey, we will contribute to 4 per cent of the qualified female teachers in Sierra Leone.
