Healthcare and Clean Water
Through our work in communities around the world, we are aiming to prevent avoidable childhood illnesses and infectious diseases through access to clean water and safe toilets. Of the world’s seven billion people, 2.4 billion people don’t have access to basic sanitation and over one billion people still defecate in the open.
Girls are more likely to finish their education if they have access to school toilets and menstruation facilities. Only 12 per cent of girls and women have access to sanitary products around the world. The rest rely on old, dirty rags, newspaper, leaves, dirt, and other unhygienic materials that often lead to infection.
Young people who have no access to appropriate and confidential advice and services are at risk of unwanted teenage pregnancies, unsafe abortions and sexually transmitted infections including HIV. At Plan International UK we support quality sexual and reproductive health education and services around the world.
